Tile is sold by the box, not by the square foot — so the last step of every tile estimate is turning your square footage into a whole number of cartons. This guide walks the conversion end to end: how box coverage is labelled, how waste changes the count, and how to check the number before you load a cart.
Divide the square footage you need to buy — your floor area plus a waste allowance — by the coverage printed on the box, then round up. A 12×10 ft room is 120 sq ft, which becomes 132 sq ft at a 10% waste allowance, or 9 boxes if each box covers 15 sq ft.
There is no standard box size in the tile industry. Manufacturers ship whatever piece count keeps a carton at a liftable weight, so coverage varies with tile size, thickness, and material. Mass-market cartons generally land somewhere between 10 and 22 square feet — the exact figure is printed on the end of the box, usually as both a piece count and a square-foot coverage.
Three steps: measure the area, add a waste allowance, then divide by box coverage and round up. Rounding up is not optional — a box is the smallest unit you can buy, and no retailer will sell you 0.4 of one.
That rounding-up step is where most of the slack in a tile order comes from. The example above buys 9 boxes covering 135 sq ft against a 132 sq ft requirement — roughly 15 sq ft more than the bare floor area, which is exactly the attic stock you want left over.

The spread is large enough to matter: the same room needs anywhere from 6 to 14 boxes depending on how the tile is packed. That is why the box count has to be the last step of the estimate, after you have picked an actual product.
If the carton lists pieces rather than coverage, you need a tile count instead of a square-foot total. These counts come from the calculator's own layout engine: it lays the grid at a 1/8" joint and counts a partial tile at the wall as a whole tile, which is why the numbers differ slightly from dividing square footage by tile area.

How much tile do I need?Waste allowance scales with how many cuts the pattern forces. A straight lay wastes tile only at the perimeter; a diagonal or herringbone lay wastes it on every angled cut. Because boxes are indivisible, though, a bigger allowance does not always mean a bigger order.

Most retailers accept full, unopened, undamaged boxes of stocked tile within their standard return window, which is what makes rounding up cheap. Special-order and clearance tile is frequently final sale, so confirm the policy before you rely on returning the excess.
Because the layout engine counts a partial tile at the wall as a whole tile — you cannot buy 60% of a tile. It also lays the grid at a real grout joint (1/8" by default), which shifts where the cuts fall. The result is a count you can actually order against rather than an idealised division.
