A shower wall needs a substrate rated for constant moisture — cement backer board at a minimum 1/2 inch (12.7 mm) per the TCNA Handbook, or a waterproofing membrane over the same — before thickness of the finish tile even enters the conversation. Wall flatness is the other variable that gets skipped. The other common failure is mixing tile from different production lots without checking gauge first. Two boxes of the same marble SKU purchased months apart can differ enough in thickness to create a visible step at the seam, particularly on a single unbroken wall run without a trim piece to break the sightline.
