Porcelain is a dense stoneware body fired hot enough that it absorbs almost no water, which is exactly why it's marketed for patios in the first place. ANSI A137.1 sets the bar for the classification: to be called porcelain, water absorption has to be at or below 0.5%. That number matters more outdoors than anywhere else in the house, because water absorbed into a tile body freezes and expands in cold climates, and a tile that takes on more than a trace of moisture will spall or crack after enough freeze-thaw cycles.
The catch is that not every tile labeled porcelain at a big-box store is sold or tested for exterior use. Plenty of glazed porcelain made for interior floors technically meets the 0.5% absorption spec but was never designed with the slip resistance or thickness exterior installs need.
