Calculate tile quantities for every shower surface — walls, floor, ceiling, niche, and curb. Includes pre-set standard shower sizes, waste factors, and waterproofing considerations.
A standard shower needs between 56 and 100+ square feet of tile depending on size, layout, and extras like niches and curbs. Always add 15–20% for waste.
Before calculating tile, you need your shower dimensions. Here are the three most common pre-set shower sizes used in residential construction. All wall calculations assume 8-foot (96-inch) ceiling height with tile running floor to ceiling on all three walls.
| Shower Size | Wall Area (3 walls) | Floor Area | Approx. Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| 36" × 36" (3ft × 3ft) | 72 sq ft | 9 sq ft | ~81 sq ft |
| 48" × 36" (4ft × 3ft) | 88 sq ft | 12 sq ft | ~100 sq ft |
| 60" × 32" (5ft × 2.67ft) | 81.3 sq ft | 13.3 sq ft | ~95 sq ft |
Note: These calculations assume 8-foot ceiling height and tiling all three walls floor-to-ceiling. Subtract approximately 5 sq ft for a standard shower door opening. Your actual dimensions may vary — always measure your specific shower before ordering tile.
Not sure which size applies to you? Measure your shower opening width (the wall with the door or curtain) and the depth (side walls). The 60" × 32" size is common for tub-to-shower conversions, while 36" × 36" is typical for corner showers.
Most showers have three tiled walls — one back wall and two side walls. The fourth side is the door or curtain opening. Here's how to calculate the total wall tile area:
Width × Height = Back wall area
Example: 48" (4ft) × 96" (8ft) = 32 sq ft
Depth × Height × 2 = Side walls area
Example: 36" (3ft) × 96" (8ft) × 2 = 48 sq ft
Total Wall Area = (Width × Height) + (Depth × Height × 2)
Then subtract the door/opening area (typically ~5 sq ft for a standard 24–28" shower door).
For showers that don't tile all the way to the ceiling, replace the 8-foot ceiling height with your actual tile height. Many designs tile to 7 feet or just above the showerhead (approximately 84 inches).
Do not subtract the area behind your showerhead, valve, or body sprays. You need tile behind all fixtures for waterproofing. The small cutouts around mixing valves and pipe stubs are accounted for in your waste percentage.
If your shower has a half-wall or pony wall (common in walk-in showers), calculate that wall separately: width × half-wall height. Add it to your total and remember to tile both sides of any freestanding half-wall.
Shower floor tile is calculated separately from wall tile because it typically uses a different tile size and style. The formula is straightforward:
Floor Area = Width × Depth
Example: 48" (4ft) × 36" (3ft) = 12 sq ft
Shower floors must slope toward the drain (typically ¼ inch per foot). Smaller mosaic tiles — usually 1×1 inch or 2×2 inch — conform to this slope much better than large-format tiles. The additional grout lines also provide critical traction on wet surfaces.
Best for complex slopes and small showers
Good balance of aesthetics and slope conformity
Only for linear drains with single-direction slope
The shower floor is built on a pre-slope (mortar bed) that directs water to the drain. When calculating floor tile, do not subtract the drain area — the small circular cutout (typically 4" diameter) is negligible and accounted for in your waste factor. However, if using a large linear drain (12–36" long), subtract approximately 0.25–0.5 sq ft from your floor total.
A shower niche (recessed shelf) has five interior surfaces that all need tile. Here's the breakdown for a standard niche measuring 12" wide × 14" tall × 3.5" deep:
| Surface | Dimensions | Area |
|---|---|---|
| Back wall | 12" × 14" | 1.17 sq ft |
| Two side walls | 3.5" × 14" × 2 | 0.68 sq ft |
| Top (ceiling) | 12" × 3.5" | 0.29 sq ft |
| Bottom (shelf) | 12" × 3.5" | 0.29 sq ft |
| Total | ~2.4 sq ft |
Tip: While a standard niche needs about 2.4 sq ft of tile, plan for 3.5–4 sq ft to account for cuts and waste. Niche tiles require precise cuts at corners and edges, which increases breakage. If using accent tile in the niche, order a separate small quantity with extra waste built in.
The shower curb is the raised barrier at the shower entrance that keeps water contained. A standard curb has three tile surfaces: the front face, the top, and the back face.
Typically 5" tall × 3" wide × shower opening width (usually 24–36")
For a 36"-wide curb: Front (5" × 36") + Top (3" × 36") + Back (5" × 36") = ~2.5 sq ft
If you plan to tile the shower ceiling (recommended for steam showers), the area is the same as the floor: width × depth. For a 48" × 36" shower, that adds another 12 sq ft. Use the same tile as the walls for a seamless look, or choose a lighter color to prevent the space from feeling closed in.
Tile itself is not waterproof — the waterproofing membrane behind the tile is what protects your walls and subfloor. Waterproofing is a critical step that affects how your tile adheres and how long your shower lasts.
Polyethylene sheet applied with thin-set mortar
Most reliable for full shower waterproofing. Requires 2" overlap at all seams and pre-formed corners at wall junctions. Tile bonds directly to the membrane surface.
Roller- or brush-applied liquid coating
Applied in two coats over cement board. Easier for DIY projects but requires proper thickness (minimum 30 mil dry film). Reinforce seams and corners with fabric tape.
Waterproofing membranes add a thin layer (1–3mm) to your wall surfaces. This is important for two reasons:

Let's walk through a full tile calculation for a 48" × 36" shower with 8-foot ceilings, one standard niche, and a curb:
| Surface | Calculation | Area |
|---|---|---|
| Back wall | 4ft × 8ft | 32 sq ft |
| Two side walls | 3ft × 8ft × 2 | 48 sq ft |
| Door opening (subtract) | Approx. standard opening | −5 sq ft |
| Wall subtotal | 75 sq ft | |
| Floor | 4ft × 3ft | 12 sq ft |
| Niche (1 standard) | 12" × 14" × 3.5" deep | ~2.4 sq ft |
| Curb | 5" tall × 36" wide (3 faces) | ~2.5 sq ft |
| Net Total | 91.9 sq ft |
Accounts for cuts at corners, around fixtures, and pattern matching
Higher waste for mosaics and drain cutout
Small precise cuts increase breakage
Grand total: approximately 108 sq ft of tile across all surfaces
