Exterior-facing entryways with a transom or sidelight that lets in direct sun, or slabs over an unheated garage stem wall, see more expansion and contraction than an interior room. That's a reason to lean toward a modified A118.15 mortar with better flexibility rather than the cheapest bag that technically clears the ANSI bar, even though both would pass a spec sheet comparison.
