Standard tile spacing runs from 1/16" (rectified porcelain) to 1/2" (natural stone). Most ceramic and porcelain installations use a 1/8" joint. How wide should grout lines be?
Grout joint width is driven by three things: tile manufacturing variation, tile material, and the look you're going for. Rectified porcelain — where every edge is precision-ground after firing — can run as tight as 1/16". Pressed (non-rectified) tile needs a wider joint to hide variation between tiles in the same box.
Natural stone is a different conversation entirely: tumbled travertine, slate, and brick-look tiles look correct with 1/4" – 1/2" joints because the wider grout reads as period-authentic and gives bedding room for irregular tile thicknesses.

When in doubt, default to 1/8" for ceramic and porcelain floor tile, 1/16" for rectified porcelain or wall tile with built-in lugs, and 3/8" for any natural stone with visible edge variation.
How much grout do I need?
Grout coverage on the bag is given in linear feet at a fixed joint width and depth (typically 1/4" deep). To compute linear footage from a room sketch, count joints per axis and multiply each by the perpendicular room dimension:
joints_per_axis = floor(room_dim ÷ (tile_dim + grout_width))
total_joint_length = joints_x × room_height + joints_y × room_width
For a 10×8 ft room (120×96 in) tiled with 12×12" tiles and a 1/8" joint:
- Vertical joints: floor(120 ÷ 12.125) = 9
- Horizontal joints: floor(96 ÷ 12.125) = 7
- Linear total: 9 × 96 + 7 × 120 = 864 + 840 = 1,704 in (≈ 142 ft)
A 25 lb bag of sanded grout covers roughly 100–200 linear feet of 1/8" joint at 1/4" depth. Check the bag's coverage chart — coverage drops sharply as joint width or depth increases. Add 10–15% to your linear footage to cover spillage and re-grouting any pinholes.

Spacer sizes & where to buy
Tile spacers enforce a consistent joint while the thinset cures. The most common formats are X-shape (four-way intersections in a grid layout), T-shape (three-way intersections in a brick offset), U-shape / horseshoe (slip-on edge spacers), and wedges(tapered shims for stone and large-format tile). Buy more than you need — they're cheap and you'll lose some in the thinset.

You can find tile spacers at any tile retailer (Home Depot, Lowe's, Floor & Decor) and on Amazon. The 1/8" and 1/4" sizes are the most stocked; rare sizes like 3/32" or 5/32" may need a tile-supply specialty store. For very large jobs, look at leveling-clip systems (Raimondi, MLT) — they double as spacers and lippage preventers but require a specialized tool to install.
Pull X-spacers before the thinset cures (typically 20–30 minutes after setting) so the grout joint reaches all the way to the substrate. Leaving spacers in place creates air gaps that weaken the grout and trap moisture.
Common tile spacing mistakes
- !Joint too tight for the tile.Hairline grout joints crack within a year on floors with thermal movement. ANSI A108.02 says joint > 3× tile variation — measure two opposite tiles in the box before you commit.
- !Mixing rectified and non-rectified in the same job. The minimum joints differ; you'll see uneven grout lines where they meet.
- !Forgetting to account for movement / expansion joints. TCNA EJ171 calls for a soft (caulked) joint every 20–25 ft interior, every 8–12 ft exterior, and at every wall, plane change, and dissimilar material. These are NOT grouted.
- !Using the wrong grout for the joint.Sanded grout for joints ≥ 1/8"; unsanded for < 1/8" or for polished stone (sand scratches the finish).
- !Not dry-laying first. Set out a row of tile with your spacers BEFORE mixing thinset to confirm the joint width gives clean cuts at walls and balanced borders.
ANSI & TCNA spacing standards
Two industry references govern tile spacing in the US:
- ANSI A108.02 §4.3.8:Sets the rule that grout joint width must be at least three times the actual variation between the largest and smallest tile in a box. Hard minimum of 1/16".
- TCNA Handbook EJ171:Specifies movement-joint placement — soft (caulked) joints at perimeters, plane changes, and at intervals of 20–25 ft interior and 8–12 ft exterior. These joints are sized 1/4" – 3/8" and are filled with elastomeric sealant, not grout.
- TCNA F-141 / W-202: The reference details for floor and wall installations, which include recommended joint widths for ceramic, porcelain, and stone.
If you're submitting an installation for warranty review or a commercial inspection, the joint must conform to ANSI A108.02 and the appropriate TCNA detail. For residential DIY, following the rule-of-thumb chart above will produce a code-compliant installation in nearly every case.
