Porcelain isn't waterproof and neither is ceramic — the real difference is water absorption. Here's what the ANSI numbers mean and when that gap actually changes the job.
Porcelain doesn't need to be waterproof instead of ceramic — neither material is actually waterproof, and both still need a membrane behind them in wet areas. The real difference is water absorption: porcelain must test at 0.5% or lower under ANSI A137.1, while ceramic tile can range from vitreous grades under 3% up to nonvitreous grades over 7%, which is why porcelain performs better in showers, exterior patios, and freeze-thaw climates even though the membrane requirement doesn't change.
Both materials get graded on the same scale: how much water the fired clay body soaks up. ASTM C373 splits that scale into four bands — impervious, vitreous, semi-vitreous, and nonvitreous — and porcelain has to land at the top of it. To carry the label under ANSI A137.1, a tile has to test at 0.5% water absorption or lower. Ceramic tile has no such floor. A dense ceramic floor tile might land in the vitreous range, under 3%, while a lighter-bodied ceramic wall tile can sit in semi-vitreous territory and still be sold as ceramic. Anything testing above 7% is nonvitreous, and that's where a lot of decorative wall-only ceramic lives.
The gap comes from how the tile is made, not just what it's called. Porcelain uses a finer, more refined clay body pressed at higher density and fired at a higher temperature, which closes up the pores that would otherwise pull in water. Ceramic bodies are coarser and fired cooler, so the clay itself stays more porous — the glazed surface is what keeps water out day to day, and that surface is only as good as its weakest scratch or chip.

Grout joints are far more porous than either tile body, and water works through them into the mortar bed and substrate regardless of what the field tile is rated at. ANSI A326.3 sets a minimum dynamic coefficient of friction (DCOF) of 0.42 for tile used on wet-area floors. That rating has nothing to do with absorption — a porcelain tile can meet the 0.5% absorption threshold and still fail the 0.42 DCOF minimum if its surface is polished and smooth. Choosing a tile for a shower floor or entry means checking both numbers separately, not assuming one covers the other.

The absorption gap starts to matter more on shower floors, where standing water, thermal cycling, and heavier foot traffic put more stress on the tile body itself; porcelain's lower absorption gives it a longer margin if the membrane ever gets compromised at a pinhole or a cut edge. It matters even more outdoors. In a climate with real freeze-thaw cycles, water that gets into a porous ceramic body can freeze, expand, and spall the tile face off; porcelain's ≤0.5% absorption limits how much water gets in to begin with. Water still gets through the grout lines — it was never going to be stopped by the tile body — and it starts accumulating behind tile with nowhere to drain or dry out. None of those are absorption problems; they're membrane problems wearing an absorption-shaped excuse. Fixing them after the fact usually means opening up the wall or floor assembly rather than swapping tile, which is a far more expensive repair than installing the membrane correctly the first time.
